Verification of induction zone models for wind farm annual energy production estimation

Abstract Fast engineering wake models are the backbone of wind farm annual energy production (AEP) estimators, whereas addition induction zone in existing tools is a more recent response to rising concerns over blockage associated losses. Here, “blockage” describes combined fields all turbines inside farm. Unlike term might suggest, not only reduces flow speeds, but also increases them; for instance along outer edges farms. Evaluating overall impact on AEP these gains and losses necessitates accurate models. Whilst tuned predict performance, derived accurately predicting near field far value—important simulations. This paper presents implemented simulation tool PyWake, as well results from novel analytical compares their predictions RANS-AD simulations different turbines. We demonstrate that when including simulations, downstream speed-ups need be included avoid an unrealistic bias toward loss expansion significantly impacts at rated thrust levels.
